If foundations and nonprofits are to fulfill their social missions, they need to build organizational cultures that are focused on proactive actions designed to dismantle structural racism and inequities both inside and outside their organizations, a report from Equity in the Center, a project of ProInspire, argues.
Our thoughts continue to be with those affected by the recent earthquake, aftershocks and tsunami in Japan. The preliminary numbers on those affected by these disasters are staggering.

In the wake of the U.S. withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the collapse of the Afghan government, and the Taliban’s takeover, many Afghans are fleeing for their lives. While up-to-date figures are unavailable due to the intense conflict, more than 1 million Afghans remain displaced from their homes due to ongoing violence and frequent natural disasters. We are grateful for our colleagues at Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR) who have compiled a list of actions to support philanthropic response. Maryland Philanthropy Network will continue to post ways in which philanthropy may respond to all that is happening in the world and we urge foundations and individual philanthropists to look into the future of how all of this will change Maryland and what your role may be to relieve suffering and build for our future.
The Greater Baltimore/Washington region is experiencing enormous growth in giving circles that are having an impact in our community- both through the specific programs they are funding and as catalysts for the growth of philanthropy overall.
A collaborative project of the BIP and Central Baltimore Partnership, this new directory of Baltimore nonprofit and public workforce development organizations is now available to help employers and community stakeholders find workforce partners to meet hiring needs. It summarizes the work of more than 45 organizations that support Baltimore City workers by offering skills training, eliminating barriers to employment, and facilitating job placement.
