Discussion of Baltimore Arts & Entertainment Districts - 2024

The Arts Funders Affinity Group invites all members interested in arts and community investment to this continuation of conversations held in October 2018, July 2019 and April 2020. Leaders of Baltimore City's four Arts and Entertainment Districts, Chad Hayes, Director of Community Planning and Revitalization at the Baltimore City Planning Department, and David D. Mitchell, Program Director for Arts and Entertainment Districts, Maryland State Arts Council will provide updates about each districts’ major projects, redesignation status, successes, and current challenges. In addition, we’ll learn about the City's coordination efforts and funding and discuss current issues, such as safety.

Briefing on Historic Plan to Address Vacant Properties in Baltimore Neighborhoods

In 2023, Mayor Brandon Scott, BUILD, and the Greater Baltimore Committee formed an agreement to end the crisis of vacant and abandoned properties in Baltimore City over the next 15 years. This partnership is committed to a “whole blocks” approach that will leverage an estimated $3 billion in public investment — including $300 million in private and philanthropic contributions — to bring an additional $5 billion in private investments to neighborhoods across Baltimore. We invite business and philanthropic leaders to a briefing about this strategy. The session will highlight specific areas where expertise and resources from the business and philanthropic communities can support a historic public-private partnership to eliminate vacant housing and build safe, stable neighborhoods where all city residents can thrive.

Mourning the Passing of Patrice Cromwell, Vice President of the Annie E. Casey Foun­da­tion's Center for Economic Opportunity

The Annie E. Casey Foun­da­tion is sad­dened to share that Patrice Cromwell, vice pres­i­dent of the Foundation’s Cen­ter for Eco­nom­ic Oppor­tu­ni­ty, passed away on Aug. 27, 2024, after a long ill­ness. Cromwell, who spent near­ly 20 years at the Foun­da­tion, led its invest­ments to improve finan­cial sta­bil­i­ty and edu­ca­tion­al and eco­nom­ic prospects for chil­dren, young peo­ple and families.

Baltimore Museum of Industry to Launch Key Bridge Exhibition with $545,000 Grant from Baltimore Community Foundation

Baltimore Community Foundation has awarded a $545,000 grant to the Baltimore Museum of Industry, providing critical early support for the development of a major exhibition memorializing the victims and impact of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. This lead gift will jumpstart the museum's fundraising campaign and underwrite a significant portion of the exhibition’s development, allowing the museum to move forward with confidence.

Child Poverty Nearly Triples to 13% Over Three Years

Child pover­ty in the U.S. has surged, near­ly tripling from 5% in 2021 to 13% in 2024. This dra­mat­ic increase fol­lows the expi­ra­tion of pan­dem­ic-era eco­nom­ic poli­cies and ris­ing prices that have strained fam­i­ly bud­gets nation­wide. How­ev­er, a new report from the Annie E. Casey Foun­da­tion under­scores the pro­found impact of pub­lic poli­cies and pro­grams, demon­strat­ing their capac­i­ty to cut child pover­ty in half.

FTEHB’s robust three-year plan outlines specific actions this funder network will carry out. FTEHB is committed to adapting to the changing circumstances of those who are unhoused; the realities faced by government leaders, public and private funding; and what it can learn from emerging best practices. The group’s members are excited to have come this far and recognize this as the beginning of a new chapter in their work together.

Harm Reduction Summit: Addressing the Older Adult Opioid Overdose Crisis

Over the past six years, Baltimore has endured one of America’s deadliest drug epidemics. Black men in their mid-50s to early 70s are experiencing fatal overdoes at a significantly higher rate than any other group. While just 7 percent of Baltimore City’s population, they account for nearly 30 percent of drug fatalities – a death rate 20 times that of the rest of the country. Black men of that age in Baltimore city are more likely to die of substance overdose than from cancer or even Covid-19 at the height of the pandemic. Join Maryland Philanthropy Network to collaborate with colleagues to learn about harm reduction programs, challenges in implementation, and intervention methods to prevent fatal outcomes.
