Join Maryland Philanthropy Network staff and your philanthropic peers for Economic Opportunity Funders' briefing on the new political environment and its impact on social policy. Together in Arlington, VA, and virtually, funders will network around, learn about, and discuss: what's at stake and in play at the federal and state levels; coordinated efforts underway to shape the budget and tax fights ahead; implications for philanthropy in the short and long term; and strategies for individual and collective action.
The Declaration of Independence, written 245 years ago, inspired a revolution that helped birth a nation. The power of the Declaration’s “self-evident” truths also inspired global movements for human rights and democracy that remain powerful today, by declaring that all “are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” As we emerge from a tumultuous year—of pandemic, racial strife, and party polarization—it is worth returning to these fundamental truths, and to reflect on how they might help us heal and rebuild our incredibly diverse nation. This 4th of July weekend, a group of funders, thinkers, creators, and community leaders are launching the New Declaration campaign, which invites every community to join in reflection and creative expression. Our goal is to strengthen the foundations of our nation in advance of the Declaration’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking, poignant and powerfully packaged event hosted by the Maryland Philanthropy Network for Baltimore Area Grantmakers (Maryland Philanthropy Network). This event included a discussion by Kevin Shird and Nelson Malden, authors of the recently published book The Colored Waiting Room: Empowering the Original and the New Civil Movements followed by a panel discussion on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Maryland is changing – bringing new possibilities, diverse people, and a shifting economy. This is a moment when we are ahead of many parts of the country, and it is to our advantage to reimagine our state for the future.
Michael Bigley is the Director of the Venable Foundation, one of the largest law firm foundations in the country. A key aspect of his work has been to increase public awareness of Venable’s funding opportunities and diversify the grantee docket. As we transition back to more face-to-face activities in the future, Michael looks forward to meeting new MPN colleagues and discovering how philanthropy can address systemic issues present in our communities together.

MPN members are invited to join us for a morning of reconnection, celebration, and updates on the vibrant activities of our network. We are excited to have Susan Taylor Batten, president and chief executive officer of ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities, as our keynote speaker to inspire and challenge us as we continue working together for an equitable and just Maryland.
