Adapted from remarks by Crickett Woloson, past co-chair of the Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (or REDI) Committee of the Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle and trustee of The Elbow Fund, delivered at the Philanos POWER UP Conference "Stepping into Trust-Based Philanthropy" session on November 6, 2023. The session offered a chance for philanthropy peers to share learnings from shifts they've made to their grant processes. For the BWGC, the Grants Lab offered an opportunity to rethink, try, adjust, and try again.

What is impact investing and why would a foundation want to carry this out?
All grantmakers are invited to participate in this four-part professional development series taught by our region's experienced practitioners, presented by Maryland Philanthropy Network. Session Two will cover funding recommendations and due diligence and legal and ethical issues. Participants will learn the art of grantmaking, balancing organizational values and goals, trustees’ interests, applicant relationships, and best practices in due diligence to better review and recommend grant proposals. Participants will also be introduced to key legal and ethical issues in grantmaking through scenarios and MPN’s Guiding Principles.

Join us to learn about the Maryland Suspension Representation Project's work to reconnect students with school and needed supports, hear how this can improve school systems and reduce school push-out and racial disparities in discipline, and share your ideas for keeping students in school.
Join Maryland Philanthropy Network’s Education Funders Affinity Group for a two-part series on tutoring programs. The first discussion will take place with three of Baltimore’s largest tutoring providers focused on literacy. We'll be joined by Lindsay Sullivan, Amplify; Rudi Zellman, The Literacy Lab; and Jeffrey Zwillenberg, Reading Partners. Come learn about what is happening with literacy tutoring programs, what those programs looked like before the pandemic and going forward, possibilities around what’s needed to scale those programs, and ways that philanthropy can help.
You asked, we’re listening. Our 2022 MPN Member Survey revealed interest in programs on public/private partnerships. Join us later this month for a special session to learn about best practices in public/private partnerships.
