Re-Imagining Diverse Schools

60 years after Brown vs the Board of Education, American public schools are more segregated today than in 1968. In the state of Maryland, 9 out of every 10 black Maryland students and 8 out of every 10 Latino students attends a majority-minority school. 1 of every 4 black Maryland students attends a school that is 99-100% minority. Segregating poor, minority children in high poverty schools increases educational inequities.

It could not be clearer in those moments how firmly engrained white supremacy is in all the structures of our nation. The response from law enforcement at the Capitol was unrecognizable from the over-policing that occurs in many of the communities we serve and represent. The upswell of white supremacists came from across our country and from nearly every community. We at Maryland Philanthropy Network stand with our colleagues and leaders across the country in calling for change. Our communities and our future depend on it.

Dr. Tracey Durant, Executive Director of City Schools Equity Office, will share an overview of their equity-centered pipeline work, priorities for City Schools connected to their successes and strategies to reimagine this work at City Schools, and how this work builds on philanthropic accomplishments along with other successes that helped to position City Schools for this current opportunity with their principal pipeline development.
