Grantmaker's Fundamentals Series | Part 2: Funding Recommendations and Due Diligence

All grantmakers are invited to participate in this four-part professional development series taught by our region's experienced practitioners, presented by Maryland Philanthropy Network. Session Two will cover funding recommendations and due diligence and legal and ethical issues. Participants will learn the art of grantmaking, balancing organizational values and goals, trustees’ interests, applicant relationships, and best practices in due diligence to better review and recommend grant proposals. Participants will also be introduced to key legal and ethical issues in grantmaking through scenarios and MPN’s Guiding Principles.

This session will cover maximizing grant impact, managing your grant portfolio, and continuing to learn. Participants will learn to connect capacity building, advocacy, grantee engagement, and diversity/inclusion to effectiveness and identify leadership roles in philanthropy beyond delivering dollars. Participants will also discuss grant monitoring, evaluation, and closure, and discover additional resources for ongoing development.

This shift, however, has not been easy, with some communities experiencing racist, anti-immigrant backlash. Join this webinar to learn from three organizers and movement builders about how they are fighting back against discrimination and the exploitation of immigrant communities while building immigrant and worker power in rural areas.

Like Learning A Language: Bringing the Voices Behind Baltimore’s Permitting and Grantmaking Systems into Conversation

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship at UNC at Chapel Hill has a Civic Collaboration Summer for rising sophomores, and five scholars were assigned to work with Maryland Philanthropy Network and the Middendorf Foundation. This study looks to explore both the permit and grant processes from the perspectives of nonprofit organizations, foundations, and the Baltimore City Government. By interviewing various stakeholders, the scholars gained insight and understood just how complex these processes were. All sides provided their experiences, which led the scholars to develop key takeaways and recommendations to create a more efficient system.

Strengthening Baltimore's Workforce: Reflections and Lessons Learned

For over a decade, members of the Baltimore Workforce Funders Collaborative (BWFC) have supported a growing number of industry focused workforce development initiatives, and the outcomes are notable. Through these efforts, previously unemployed residents are getting industry recognized certifications and jobs with career advancement opportunities at impressive rates. This report highlights several of these initiatives and offers recommendations on how they can be expanded.
