Over the past six years, Baltimore has endured one of America’s deadliest drug epidemics. Black men in their mid-50s to early 70s are experiencing fatal overdoes at a significantly higher rate than any other group. While just 7 percent of Baltimore City’s population, they account for nearly 30 percent of drug fatalities – a death rate 20 times that of the rest of the country. Black men of that age in Baltimore city are more likely to die of substance overdose than from cancer or even Covid-19 at the height of the pandemic. By the end of 2017, Baltimore suffered 343 homicides, a new record for killings per capita. This continues a troubling trajectory; overall violent crime between 2012 to 2017 is up 9.8 percent. Most categories of violent crime either increased or stayed about the same, with the biggest percentage growths in homicides, shootings and robberies. Maryland Philanthropy Network joins United Philanthropy Forum signing on to a letter related to understanding how changes to the tax code in Congress impact the charitable sector and what it means for data-driven decision making to have an impact on policy reform. The ask is to include charitable organizations and donors in discussions that impact the sector as soon as possible. This letter was signed onto this as it is in alignment with the broader policy of charitable reform which seems to allow for general support.
Giving circle leaders are invited to the twelfth annual Giving Circle Connector Gathering. The dozens of giving circles in our region will gather virtually to connect and learn from one another about a variety of issues important to giving circles. Maryland Philanthropy Network has joined Maryland Nonprofits and our colleagues across Maryland in responding to a call for ideas from the State for how the budget surplus should be allocated. MPN was part of a group of 170 practitioners and partners that came together to create a joint appeal the result of which is this letter to the Governor. Together, we urge the State to dedicate $1 billion of the projected budget surplus for targeted relief, and that $500 million of this commitment should continue in future budgets to assure sustainability and for more equitable disbursement of state resources in partnership with the social purpose sector.
Foundations on the Hill (FOTH) is a multi-day event that brings together foundation leaders, grantmakers, and regional associations from across the country to DC for meetings with Congress about key issues of importance to foundations and philanthropy. The next Foundations on the Hill will take place Monday, February 27, 2023 to Wednesday, March 1, 2023.
