The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDI) meets quarterly to infuse Maryland Philanthropy Network's values of diversity, inclusiveness and respect in our work.
The Declaration of Independence, written 245 years ago, inspired a revolution that helped birth a nation. The power of the Declaration’s “self-evident” truths also inspired global movements for human rights and democracy that remain powerful today, by declaring that all “are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” As we emerge from a tumultuous year—of pandemic, racial strife, and party polarization—it is worth returning to these fundamental truths, and to reflect on how they might help us heal and rebuild our incredibly diverse nation. This 4th of July weekend, a group of funders, thinkers, creators, and community leaders are launching the New Declaration campaign, which invites every community to join in reflection and creative expression. Our goal is to strengthen the foundations of our nation in advance of the Declaration’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
Howard County funders are coordinating to rapidly raise funds and deploy critical resources to nonprofits in Howard County through HoCoRespond.com, with the goal of raising $100,000 in the next 10 days.<
The University of Colorado Denver’s second phase of an organizational network study of the BIP highlights results from extensive interviews with small business, workforce, and community stakeholders. The research brief includes community perspectives on economic inclusion work as well as a range of recommendations for institutions as well as businesses and public partners to consider as they work to implement new hiring, purchasing and investment strategies.
The application for Open Society Institute-Baltimore’s 2018 cohort of Community Fellows is now available. Applications are due by 5:00pm on Monday, March 5, 2018.

Construction on 21st Century School Buildings is well underway with two completed schools, Fort Worthington Elementary/Middle School and Frederick Elementary School, and seven more currently in process. The report goes beyond big-picture dollar figures to point out key imbalances within philanthropy, most notably the minuscule amount of support and action to advance social justice for people with disabilities across the spectrum of funding.

People and communities of faith contribute to environmental causes, both by stewardship of their own properties and by advocating for environmental protections as a tenet of their faith. Pope Francis' encyclical has raised awareness of the role of faith leaders in calling for a range of environmental reforms. Three Maryland organizations that support activism in faith communities will share their work with us.
