Taking Philanthropy Outside: How Do We Tell Our Story?

Police reform is an issue that intersects with nearly every focus issue of our philanthropic community. This is one in a series of programs that will engage community and justice professionals in deepening funder understanding of the reform processes underway, the barriers to reform and the potential impacts on the issues and investment areas that are the focus of our funding community.

Findings from a new survey conducted by the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) show that U.S. nonprofits faced major challenges but fared better than expected in 2020, thanks to an infusion of philanthropic and government funding. However, the data reveal concerning disparities in the experiences of women leading nonprofits and of nonprofits serving certain communities of color.

By the end of 2017, Baltimore suffered 343 homicides, a new record for killings per capita. This continues a troubling trajectory; overall violent crime between 2012 to 2017 is up 9.8 percent. Most categories of violent crime either increased or stayed about the same, with the biggest percentage growths in homicides, shootings and robberies. Join expert researchers to learn about violence as a health crisis and research-based best practices around reducing violence. The keynote speaker will be Bradley Schurman, author of Super Age: Decoding the Demographic Destiny.
In the last week of July 2010, torrential rains caused devastating floods in large parts of Pakistan. The floods have affected more than 20 million people (more than 10 per cent of the total population). Devastating communities throughout the country, in an area of at least 160,000 square kilometres — larger than England — the floods killed more than 1,700 people, and damaged or destroyed nearly 1.9 million homes.*

This is the first session of a 6-part webinar series on trust-based philanthropy focused on addressing common questions, clarifying misconceptions, and exploring ways to overcome obstacles in implementing trust-based philanthropy. In this session, we will clarify the misperception that trust-based philanthropy means unconditional trust and dig into the nuances of why trust is an important vehicle for more equitable funder-grantee relationships. Speakers will share how they have cultivated (and maintained) trust, how they model and reinforce mutual accountability in a trust-based way, and how they have worked through challenging moments when trust breaks down.
"For Grantseekers: You Got the Grant, So Now What?" is an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to better understand how foundations use evaluation and reporting, and the best ways to engage funders for long-term relationship building.
