Five years since the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped our daily lives and presented us with challenges unlike any we’d faced before. Half a decade later, we’re left to reflect on how much has truly changed — and what remains the same.

Adapted from remarks by Crickett Woloson, past co-chair of the Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (or REDI) Committee of the Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle and trustee of The Elbow Fund, delivered at the Philanos POWER UP Conference "Stepping into Trust-Based Philanthropy" session on November 6, 2023. The session offered a chance for philanthropy peers to share learnings from shifts they've made to their grant processes. For the BWGC, the Grants Lab offered an opportunity to rethink, try, adjust, and try again.

2010 Floods in Pakistan

In the last week of July 2010, torrential rains caused devastating floods in large parts of Pakistan.  The floods have affected more than 20 million people (more than 10 per cent of the total population). Devastating communities throughout the country, in an area of at least 160,000 square kilometres — larger than England — the floods killed more than 1,700 people, and damaged or destroyed nearly 1.9 million homes.*
