Construction on 21st Century School Buildings is well underway with two completed schools, Fort Worthington Elementary/Middle School and Frederick Elementary School, and seven more currently in process. Maryland Philanthropy Network's Education Funders Affinity Group invites you to hear from Dr. Khalilah Harris, Managing Director of K-12 Education Policy for the Center for American Progress, and Joseph Kane, Chair of the Parent and Community Advisory Board (PCAB) of Baltimore City. Dr. Harris will begin with a primer on the gaps in federal funding and the impact on Maryland’s public schools. Dr. Harris and Mr. Kane will then engage in a conversation discussing a vision for redesigning schools that moves beyond safety precautions to a system of education that makes it possible for all children to thrive.
60 years after Brown vs the Board of Education, American public schools are more segregated today than in 1968. In the state of Maryland, 9 out of every 10 black Maryland students and 8 out of every 10 Latino students attends a majority-minority school. 1 of every 4 black Maryland students attends a school that is 99-100% minority. Segregating poor, minority children in high poverty schools increases educational inequities.
In recent years, Baltimore City Schools has considerably expanded its choice offerings, including the creation of many new charter and transformation schools.
We are excited to present our 2015 Profile of Education Giving, which aggregates data about our members’ investments in education.
In 2015, we disseminated an online survey to all members. We received responses from 50 members about the education-related organizations they support and their education focus areas.
