The Commission is to review and assess current education financing formulas and accountability measures and how each local school system spends its funds, including the increased State funds provided through the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act. Moreover, the Commission will review the Study on Adequacy of Funding for Education in the State of Maryland, required by the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act. Come hear directly from local and statewide organizations to learn about their work focused on the Kirwan Commission and other legislation focused on local, education-related issues.

The first discussion will take place with three of Baltimore’s largest tutoring providers focused on literacy. We'll be joined by Lindsay Sullivan, Amplify; Rudi Zellman, The Literacy Lab; and Jeffrey Zwillenberg, Reading Partners. Come learn about what is happening with literacy tutoring programs, what those programs looked like before the pandemic and going forward, possibilities around what’s needed to scale those programs, and ways that philanthropy can help.

Early childhood professionals play an essential role in communities, helping young children to develop, supporting working families, and enabling business operations. While affordable and high-quality childcare is critical, the early childcare sector is underfunded and dysfunctional. COVID-19 has exacerbated longstanding issues, exacting a devastating impact on childcare centers and the professionals that staff them. In this program, we will hear more about the issues impacting the early childhood workforce at the individual, employer, and systems levels. We will explore the role of employer collaboration with funders and other stakeholders to advance necessary changes in business practices and public policies to support these essential workers.
