Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking, poignant and powerfully packaged event hosted by the Maryland Philanthropy Network for Baltimore Area Grantmakers (Maryland Philanthropy Network). This event included a discussion by Kevin Shird and Nelson Malden, authors of the recently published book The Colored Waiting Room: Empowering the Original and the New Civil Movements followed by a panel discussion on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Join Maryland Philanthropy Network for a conversation with Alexandra “Alli” Smith, Chief of Partnerships and Philanthropic Strategy within the Mayor’s Office at Baltimore City Government. For over a decade, members of the Baltimore Workforce Funders Collaborative (BWFC) have supported a growing number of industry focused workforce development initiatives, and the outcomes are notable. Through these efforts, previously unemployed residents are getting industry recognized certifications and jobs with career advancement opportunities at impressive rates. This report highlights several of these initiatives and offers recommendations on how they can be expanded.
