Hunte, President and CEO of Maryland Philanthropy Network, Linda Dworak, Director of the Baltimore Workforce Funders Collaborative (BWFC), and members of the BWFC attended the annoucement of the new Baltimore Workforce Hub at Carver Vocational High School in Baltimore. At this briefing, you will hear from authors of the newly released Abell Report on the City’s contracting process and learn about the findings from a joint Middendorf/MPN study on the City’s permitting and grantmaking systems. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) is a $27 billion investment in climate and clean energy established by the Inflation Reduction Act. Please join the Green Funders Affinity Group to learn about the purpose and components of the GGRF. Representatives of local organizations that have applied for funding to benefit Maryland will describe each fund and their proposed strategy and share thoughts about barriers to community institutions accessing funding, and philanthropy’s role in supporting the infrastructure for equitable implementation of investments especially at the state and local levels.

Maryland’s Department of Labor is preparing to launch the Maryland Works for Wind program, a new apprenticeship model to support the region’s growing offshore wind industry funded with $22.9 million awarded to the state through the American Rescue Plan Good Jobs Challenge grant. In partnership with leading employers—including Chesapeake Shipbuilding, Crystal Steel Fabricators, US Wind, and Orsted Offshore North America—and seven local unions, the Maryland Works for Wind program will build a training model to meet the needs of employers and local communities. At this program, the Business Network for Offshore Wind will give an overview of Offshore Wind, what it will look like in Maryland, and the types of jobs expected to be needed. We will hear from training partner – Jane Addams Resource Corporation, and a labor representative about entry into apprenticeships that will lead to family sustaining employment in the sector.
