Our speakers will share possible avenues for a system of mixed delivery in Baltimore and across Maryland along with potential next steps. Space will be created for dialogue between funders about steps you can take together around early care and education.

The 2019 Maryland General Assembly begins Wednesday, January 9, 2019! Some are calling the upcoming session "The Education Session!" In the coming weeks, the Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education (aka Kirwan Commission) will release its final report and legislation will follow shortly thereafter. Join us for an Education Funders and Public Policy Committee Advocacy Action Discussion for 2019. During the discussion, we will share known updates for the Kirwan Commission and legislation as well as determine possible advocacy actions for grantmakers, both collectively or individually.
Maryland lawmakers passed a sweeping education package in the latest General Assembly session and recently identified a work group whose task will be to find a way to pay for it.
Maryland Philanthropy Network continues to look for ways in which funders can stay engaged with public policy in the off-season to help affect systemic change in education. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) received a generous donation of $5 million from the Sherman Family Foundation. The gift is intended to help the BSO introduce more children and young people to symphonic music, and will support the orchestra's various outreach initiatives to this end.

Specifically, they will discuss Maryland's timeline and tentative policies for implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which impact school accountability and ratings, school improvement, teacher evaluations and student assessment.
Join us for a conversation that will discuss the Baltimore Education Research Consortium (BERC)’s decade long study of post-secondary educational and workforce outcomes of Baltimore City high school graduates and the recent publication of the Baltimore College Fact Book. The conversation will also focus on the work of BERC over the last 14 years and opportunities for continued impact with the recent expansion of the consortium to include 10 new Maryland colleges and universities.

We are pleased to once again host Dr. Rachel Pfeifer, Executive Director of College and Career Readiness of Baltimore City Schools, and Kumasi Vines, Director of Career Readiness, who will share how CTE instruction has shifted during the pandemic and to share the vision and draft 4-year plan for moving forward.
