The state of Maryland has recognized the potential for registered apprenticeships both to provide a path to better-paying careers that do not require college degrees and to help employers meet their needs for employees with specialized skills. In this latest Abell Foundation report, Linda Dworak of Maryland Philanthropy Network’s Baltimore Workforce Funders Collaborative offers an overview of apprenticeship and the current landscape in Maryland and Baltimore.

Giving circle leaders are invited to the twelfth annual Giving Circle Connector Gathering. The dozens of giving circles in our region will gather virtually to connect and learn from one another about a variety of issues important to giving circles. This year's theme will be “We’re all in this Together” with a special presentation by Sara Lomelin, Executive Director of Philanthropy Together focused on leading a movement to diversify and democratize philanthropy and support Race Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work within giving circles.

Michael Bigley is the Director of the Venable Foundation, one of the largest law firm foundations in the country. A key aspect of his work has been to increase public awareness of Venable’s funding opportunities and diversify the grantee docket. Maryland Philanthropy Network is pleased to host our annual training for funders, Advancing Racial Equity in Grantmaking, in partnership with ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities. This year we offer a highly interactive virtual equivalent of the typical on-site day-long racial equity training. This introductory training, derived from the Race Matters Toolkit, presents a valuable framework that has guided and informed Maryland Philanthropy Network’s work since it was first offered to our Board, Staff and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee in April 2013. ABFE’s racial equity training is centered on the drivers of poor and disparate outcomes in Black communities and other communities of color, as well as support and tools for leading community change efforts particularly in places where there has been a long history of racial inequity.

Supporting nonprofit organizational health by way of facilitating stronger partnerships between philanthropy and nonprofits is one of three priority actions that resulted from Maryland Philanthropy Network member conversations over the past year in our State of the Sector Workgroup. MPN members are invited to build on these conversations by joining this special program with Associated Black Charities and Baltimore area Black-focused nonprofit organizations around positive relationships in support of the organizational health of nonprofit organizations.
