It could not be clearer in those moments how firmly engrained white supremacy is in all the structures of our nation. The response from law enforcement at the Capitol was unrecognizable from the over-policing that occurs in many of the communities we serve and represent. The upswell of white supremacists came from across our country and from nearly every community. We at Maryland Philanthropy Network stand with our colleagues and leaders across the country in calling for change. Our communities and our future depend on it.

Havaca Ganguly is Executive Director of The Middendorf Foundation which provides capital and one-time grants that support six areas of grantmaking focus. When Havaca took over the one staff position in late 2019, the foundation had a chance to reflect on their practices and reset operations. For more than 12 years, Maryland Philanthropy Network has led a learning agenda around racial equity for our members. Part peer-exchange, part workshop, this program is designed for members to learn from several colleague organizations about their racial equity journeys, reflect on where your organization is in its journey, and unearth insights to take into your own work. The peer exchange will include discussion of building buy-in from the board and navigating differences between staff and board on this issue. We’ll also explore ideas around future MPN activities and what offerings/supports will help move you along your journey.

Maryland Philanthropy Network's Education Funders Affinity Group invites you to hear from Dr. Khalilah Harris, Managing Director of K-12 Education Policy for the Center for American Progress, and Joseph Kane, Chair of the Parent and Community Advisory Board (PCAB) of Baltimore City. Dr. Harris will begin with a primer on the gaps in federal funding and the impact on Maryland’s public schools. Dr. Harris and Mr. Kane will then engage in a conversation discussing a vision for redesigning schools that moves beyond safety precautions to a system of education that makes it possible for all children to thrive.
Both locally and across the country intentional collaborations among funders increase the impact of philanthropy by connecting the knowledge and expertise of diverse funders with a wide range of funding interests.
