The gymnasium at Reginald F. Lewis High School was filled Saturday with people with ideas on how to improve the lives of Baltimore’s young people.
In June, ABFE released We Must be in it for the Long Haul, a call to action to philanthropy to stem anti-Black racism developed in partnership with Black foundations executives across the country.
Shanaysha Sauls, President & CEO of the Baltimore Community Foundation and one of the signatories of the statement, will ground participants in the impetus for the statement and share insight around the significance for MPN’s members. From there, MPN members will have a chance to learn and share with peers in smaller breakout groups.
The Baltimore Workforce Funders Collaborative is working with Byte Back, Pass IT On, and the Baltimore Digital Equity Coalition to identify a trainer(s) who will develop and facilitate a trauma-informed care training for up to 15 workforce development nonprofit professionals. The goal of the training will be to increase the capacity of direct service agencies by applying trauma-specific strategies to their normal service deliveries, improving the services provided to clients who have experienced trauma, and advance digital equity.

Anchor institutions in Baltimore are working to strengthen minority and local purchasing to create jobs and local economic opportunities. To improve internal policies and practices, Next Street, U3 Advisors, and ML Whelley, LLC are completing reports assessing the budgetary, policy, infrastructure, and planning processes at five Baltimore anchor institutions. This report explores food procurement processes in state and private higher educational institutions in Baltimore and identifies a range of strategies to more fully realize local purchasing power. The report recommends actions to support local minority business enterprises and small businesses, modifications to procurement processes, and outlines legislative opportunities to connect state agency and institutional purchasing power to businesses in targeted reinvestment areas. Many of the recommendations are applicable not just to food but other services and commodities as well.
