Nationally, 22 percent of all foundation grants invest in quality private and public education, which makes education second only to health as a grantmaking area.
In spite of gains over the recent decades, inequities in income, employment, educational attainment, housing and business ownership rates persist between African-American and white communities at both the national and local levels.
Building off of a successful first round of work and through support from Living Cities, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and the Goldseker Foundation, the Baltimore Integration Partnership (BIP) launched 2.0 in 2014 to deepen anchor institution’s efforts to support area residents, businesses and communities.

Michael Bigley is the Director of the Venable Foundation, one of the largest law firm foundations in the country. A key aspect of his work has been to increase public awareness of Venable’s funding opportunities and diversify the grantee docket. As we transition back to more face-to-face activities in the future, Michael looks forward to meeting new MPN colleagues and discovering how philanthropy can address systemic issues present in our communities together.
