This is the second session of a 6-part webinar series on Demystifying Trust-Based Philanthropy focused on addressing common questions, clarifying misconceptions, and exploring ways to overcome obstacles in implementing trust-based philanthropy. In this session, we’ll unpack the difference between unrestricted funding that is deployed in a trust-based way, and what it looks like when it’s not. We’ll also share case studies from funders who have shifted from project-specific to majority unrestricted funding, as well as those who have embedded trust-based values within semi-restricted grants. Participants can expect to gain greater clarity on the philosophy behind unrestricted funding in a trust-based context, and strategies for aligning trust-based values with the way grants are structured and deployed.
Maryland Philanthropy Network is pleased to host our annual training for funders, Advancing Racial Equity in Grantmaking, in partnership with ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities. This year we offer a highly interactive virtual equivalent of the typical on-site day-long racial equity training. This introductory training, derived from the Race Matters Toolkit, presents a valuable framework that has guided and informed Maryland Philanthropy Network’s work since it was first offered to our Board, Staff and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee in April 2013. ABFE’s racial equity training is centered on the drivers of poor and disparate outcomes in Black communities and other communities of color, as well as support and tools for leading community change efforts particularly in places where there has been a long history of racial inequity.
Maryland Philanthropy Network is pleased to finally host an open house for members at our office space in Baltimore’s Hampden neighborhood! Our customized 4,000-square-foot office features a polished and comfortable conference room (twice the size as our old one), casual meeting areas, an open kitchen, and over 100 feet of gallery space! All grantmakers are invited to participate in this four-part professional development series taught by our region's experienced practitioners, presented by Maryland Philanthropy Network. Session Three will cover understanding nonprofit financial statements with Jennifer Pedroni, Director at BDO FMA. Participants will learn how to read and understand budgets and financial statements to assess the health of an organization. They will also learn what questions to ask and understand how to interpret the numbers based on a nonprofit organization's age, mission, or funding streams.
On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. Hundreds have been deeply affected and thousands are injured while others will be left homeless or jobless. It can be tricky to determine how to sift through the information to prioritize philanthropic action. Our colleagues at Hispanics in Philanthropy and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy have both compiled lists of trusted resources to help philanthropy bring attention and aid to affected communities.
