Maryland 'medium risk' state for student learning loss, according to new report

With public schools in our area beginning the year with virtual instruction, a new study finds that students are at risk of learning loss, and shows that Maryland is lacking on some key indicators. The study found that students at greatest risk of falling through the cracks with virtual learning are in Southern and Midwestern states. States in the Northeast ranked the best and Maryland falls in the middle.

EdWeek Research Center is tracking states on a Coronavirus Learning Loss Risk Index. Maryland is classified as medium risk based on 4 indicators: weekly hours of live instruction, hours of all teaching activities in the home, internet availability, and device availability. The MD State board of education is requiring 3.5 hours of live instruction a day, far higher than the national median found (just 2 hours a week). An estimate from the Abell Foundation shows more than 40% of homes in Baltimore lack internet access. And a 2019 state report showed more than 300,000 rural Maryland homes lacked access.
