Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking, poignant and powerfully packaged event hosted by the Maryland Philanthropy Network for Baltimore Area Grantmakers (Maryland Philanthropy Network). This event included a discussion by Kevin Shird and Nelson Malden, authors of the recently published book The Colored Waiting Room: Empowering the Original and the New Civil Movements followed by a panel discussion on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
The Maryland Community Foundations Association (MCFA) connects and promotes community foundations as a form of philanthropy benefitting towns, cities and rural areas across our state. This group convenes in support of their shared missions and focus on helping individuals, families and businesses plan and carry out their charitable giving; and in building endowments to serve their regions' changing needs.
The School-Centered Neighborhood Investment Initiative is a strategic effort to leverage the 21st Century Buildings program $1.1 billion investment in schools construction and renovation through the alignment of resources, partners, and programs that can support transformational neighborhood revitalization.

I recently attended a Living Cities Integration Initiative site visit to the Twin Cities for some cross-site learning, and saw how affective their collective impact approach is. Through the Corridors of Opportunity initiative, they are working to build and develop a world-class regional transit system focused on seven transit corridors at various stages of operation, construction and planning.

On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. Hundreds have been deeply affected and thousands are injured while others will be left homeless or jobless. It can be tricky to determine how to sift through the information to prioritize philanthropic action. Our colleagues at Hispanics in Philanthropy and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy have both compiled lists of trusted resources to help philanthropy bring attention and aid to affected communities. We encourage you to review these resources and share your generosity by making donations to affected residents of the island.

Michael Bigley is the Director of the Venable Foundation, one of the largest law firm foundations in the country. A key aspect of his work has been to increase public awareness of Venable’s funding opportunities and diversify the grantee docket. Each year brings new opportunities for the Baltimore Community Foundation (BCF) to grow its presence and increase its positive impact in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. In 2023, after a period of significant growth at the foundation and after the intensity of the first couple of years of the COVID-19 pandemic had passed, the foundation turned its focus inward to develop and launch Inspire, its new strategic plan.
