Few things impact us more deeply than the powerful photos and heart-wrenching stories of those devastated by natural disasters. Since they are typically geographically focused, community foundation know the best way to get donations where they are immediately needed — whether it be for medical supplies, shelter, food or unexpected needs brought on by the disaster. They can get money out rapidly to vetted nonprofits who can provide targeted and much-needed assistance to their community.

Baltimore City depends on nonprofits to provide services, particularly in Black and low-income communities. A reliable contract with the city can allow a nonprofit to expand, serve more residents, and build the employment base of the city. However, longstanding delays in contracting and payment of city partners leave some non­profits asking if the barriers to accessing city funding are worth the effort. Danista E. Hunte Named President and CEO of Maryland Philanthropy Network

The Board of Directors of Maryland Philanthropy Network is pleased to announce the appointment of Danista E. Hunte as its next President and CEO, effective October 11, 2023. Danista brings with her a wealth of experience spanning over three decades in the philanthropic and non-profit sector. She most recently served as the Executive Director of Child First Authority in Baltimore and prior to that was Vice President of Community Investment for the Baltimore Community Foundation.

Maryland Community Foundations Association

The Maryland Community Foundations Association (MCFA) connects and promotes community foundations as a form of philanthropy benefitting towns, cities and rural areas across our state. This group convenes in support of their shared missions and focus on helping individuals, families and businesses plan and carry out their charitable giving; and in building endowments to serve their regions' changing needs.

2010 Earthquake in Haiti

Over 2 million people have been affected and over 200,000 people died as a result of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. 188,383 houses have been damaged or destroyed. Over 1.5 million displaced people living in 1,241 settlement sites. There are 4,758 schools that have been damaged or destroyed.*

2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Efforts

Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  The preliminary numbers on those affected by these disasters are staggering, and in the days and months to come, they may only get worse.
