The Maryland Community Foundations Association (MCFA) connects and promotes community foundations as a form of philanthropy benefitting towns, cities and rural areas across our state. Last month, I was fortunate enough to attend the first of a four-part Redefining Capital series hosted by the Federal Reserve of Richmond/Baltimore Branch and a number of community partners — including, proudly, the Maryland Philanthropy Network.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship at UNC at Chapel Hill has a Civic Collaboration Summer for rising sophomores, and five scholars were assigned to work with Maryland Philanthropy Network and the Middendorf Foundation. This study looks to explore both the permit and grant processes from the perspectives of nonprofit organizations, foundations, and the Baltimore City Government. By interviewing various stakeholders, the scholars gained insight and understood just how complex these processes were. All sides provided their experiences, which led the scholars to develop key takeaways and recommendations to create a more efficient system.

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking, poignant and powerfully packaged event hosted by the Maryland Philanthropy Network for Baltimore Area Grantmakers (Maryland Philanthropy Network). This event included a discussion by Kevin Shird and Nelson Malden, authors of the recently published book The Colored Waiting Room: Empowering the Original and the New Civil Movements followed by a panel discussion on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Maryland Philanthropy Network, in partnership with Maryland Nonprofits and Idealware, is pleased to offer a new course designed to save you time by providing you with the impartial information you need to accelerate your evaluation process of Grants Management software.
Supporting nonprofit organizational health by way of facilitating stronger partnerships between philanthropy and nonprofits is one of three priority actions that resulted from Maryland Philanthropy Network member conversations over the past year in our State of the Sector Workgroup.
