The field of corporate philanthropy will shift and adapt to make the most of limited resources of human and financial capital to help communities in their back yard and beyond. Maureen Flynn from Changing Our World - a consulting company dedicated to helping the private sector act as a force for public good - will moderate a discussion with Mateus Baptista, Deputy Director at Panasonic, and Michele Mehaffy, Consumer Affairs Manager at Wegmans, about how this work continues to evolve to meet community need.

Donor Collaboratives Are a New Approach That Advances Equity and Efficiency

Donors are joining hands at a pace we have never seen before — a trend that seems poised to continue to unlock billions more dollars in the coming years. Prompted in large part by the desire by many donors and grant makers to find more effective ways to advance equity in the United States and around the world, these collaboratives could show the way to unlocking greater giving to support social justice. And they could lead to a shift in how philanthropic dollars are distributed — most of these collaboratives are led by people of color and others who have direct experience navigating an unequal world.

Arts Grantmakers’ Changes in Practice and Sharing Session

To kick off 2022, the Arts Funders Affinity Group is pleased to welcome Eddie Torres, president & CEO of Grantmakers in the Arts. In late 2020 and again in mid-2021, Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) surveyed their members about recent and upcoming changes in arts grantmaking practices in response to the pandemic and the movement for Black lives. Eddie will share his national perspective of arts grantmaking and discuss the findings from GIA’s latest survey. We’ll then bring it home with a brief update from Nicholas Cohen from Maryland Citizens for the Arts and have a whole group sharing session about our grantmaking practice and if it reflects the national trends in increased giving, flexibility, support for individual artists, and support for BIPOC organizations. Will also identify opportunities for collaboration and continued learning.

Congratulations 2021 Changemaker Challenge winners!

The Horizon Foundation, United Way of Central Maryland, the Community Foundation of Howard County and the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County awarded a total of $60,000 at the 2021 Changemaker Challenge, an event focused on sparking innovation and fresh thinking to address some of Howard County’s most pressing issues. Ten finalists presented their ideas for social change to a live virtual audience of over 700 community members and a panel of judges.
