Committed Connections: Reflections from the Lean Funder Regional Gathering
In last month’s Member Memo, I emphasized a core belief that continues to guide our work: meaningful, lasting impact in our communities depends on collaboration. No single organization can address today’s complex challenges alone. A perfect example of this belief in action took place earlier this month when we partnered with Exponent Philanthropy to host a Lean Funder Regional Gathering at our office in Baltimore.
We were honored to welcome the group of “lean funders,” those operating with few staff or entirely volunteer teams, for an afternoon of learning, reflection, and shared experience. The gathering featured insights from the Foundation Operations and Management Report 2026, a newly released benchmarking resource from Exponent Philanthropy that offers a comprehensive look at how lean foundations operate, evolve, and lead. What stood out most throughout the afternoon was the depth and openness of the dialogue. Participants brought candor, curiosity, and a genuine interest in learning from and sharing with one another. Conversations ranged from practical operational strategies to broader questions about leadership, equity, and long-term impact. The room carried a sense of shared understanding that while each organization’s approach may differ, the mission to serve communities unites us all.
We are deeply grateful to our colleagues at Exponent Philanthropy for their leadership and collaboration and to all who joined us for contributing their perspectives and experiences. Gatherings like this remind us that philanthropy is not just about the transaction of funds; it is about relationships, learning, and a shared commitment to inspiring transformational impact.
As we move forward, we remain committed to fostering spaces where funders can connect, learn, and grow together. Please join us at the upcoming Spring Networking Happy Hour on Thursday, May 28! Hosted at La Jetée and generously supported by the Next Gen Giving Circle, come together with the Maryland Philanthropy Network community to recharge, build new relationships, and bolster our network. We can’t wait to see you there!
In partnership,
Danista E. Hunte
