Legg Mason emphasizes social responsibility, diversity at annual meeting
Legg Mason Inc. tried something a little bit different at this year's annual meeting.
Instead of just focusing on financials, Baltimore-based Legg Mason executives spent a significant amount of time on Tuesday talking about diversity, inclusiveness and corporate philanthropy. CEO Joseph A. Sullivan made remarks, as he normally does, followed by the typical numbers-driven presentation by CFO Peter Nachtwey. But then three women talked about Legg Mason's other efforts during what was characterized as a "town hall."
Bonnie Wongtrakool, a portfolio manager at Legg Mason (NYSE: LM) affiliate Western Asset Management, discussed the money manager's initiatives around making investments in companies with strong environmental and product safety, workplace diversity and strong corporate governance practices, known as ESG.
