Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum Receives $700,000 In Grants for Expansion

Poe Baltimore, the non-profit organization that stewards the historic Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum, proudly announces the award of several major grants totaling nearly $700,000. These funds will support both a significant expansion of the museum and enhanced public programming, strengthening efforts to preserve and share the legacy of one of America’s most enduring literary figures.

A transformational $579,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Energy will support a multi-year, multi-phase expansion project that will add up to 17,000 square feet to the museum’s footprint. The expanded facility will include space for permanent and special exhibitions, a new auditorium, a reading room, literary gardens, special collections, and upgraded museum operations and visitor amenities, including an expanded gift shop. This funding builds on a $150,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation, awarded earlier this year, also designated for the museum’s capital expansion campaign.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, Poe Baltimore has secured $68,000 from the Middendorf Foundation and $20,000 from the Baltimore Creative Fund. These grants will be used to create an outdoor exhibit and community art installation as nearby demolition and construction activity begins, ensuring continued community engagement and visibility for the museum during the transition.
