The Raising of Roots: Addressing Causes, Not Consequences a Philanthropic Discussion

The Raising of Roots: Addressing Causes, Not Consequences a Philanthropic Discussion

Thursday, October 26, 2023, 10:30 - 11:30 AM

Join Maryland Philanthropy Network’s Emergent Philanthropy Roundtable, to discuss Darren Walker’s book From Generosity to Justice: A New Gospel of Wealth. Bring your questions, your favorite quotes, or just a curious attitude! If you're not able to read the book but would love the opportunity to wrestle with ways to transform grant practices to achieve a more just and equitable world, you are encouraged to join as well!

This peer discussion will focus on chapters three through five, which include pages 49-95.

Prompts to consider:

  • Joyful Justice
  • What biases do we bring to the table?
  • The Ownership of Selflessness: Giving with Humility
  • The Raising of Roots: Addressing Causes, Not Consequences
  • The uncomfortable work of exposing the reasons charity is needed.
  • What investments do you think are profitable to the cause of justice?

Maryland is home to many local bookstores with this book in stock. We encourage you to consider supporting our small businesses ahead of this discussion. If you need some ideas of where to look, here are a few: Charm City Books, Greedy Reads, The Ivy Bookshop, and Red Emma’s. You can also support local stores through Bookshop.

This event is free and open to all Maryland Philanthropy Network members.
