Meet The Funders – Closing the Funding Gap for Black-Led Nonprofits

Meet The Funders – Closing the Funding Gap for Black-Led Nonprofits

Friday, February 25, 2022, 9:30 - 11:00 AM

According to a new study published in May 2020 by Bridgespan and Echoing Green, Racial Equity in Philanthropy: Closing the Funding Gap, organizations led by people of color receive less funding than majority white-led organizations. The BLK ED Network seeks to bridge the funding gap and establish relationships with local and national funders, providing our members a seat at the table not only to eat but to also have the same portion sizes.

A joint effort by Maryland Philanthropy Network and BLK ED Network, this event will provide an opportunity for black-led nonprofit leaders to enrich their understanding about funding opportunities and discuss the barriers they face in securing philanthropic funding. While studies demonstrate an increase in the percentage of grants awarded to black-led nonprofits, the overall percentages remain relatively low.

Representatives from several grantmaking organizations will provide an overview of their initiatives, briefly describe their priorities, types of grants, application guidelines, and how and when grantmaking decisions are made through a racial equity lens.

There will be break-out sessions for participants to engage with funders.

We will be joined by:

Martha Cukor, Co-chair, Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle

Kate Essex, Program Officer, The Goldseker Foundation

Darius Graham, Program Director, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

Terrill North, Executive Director, The Hoffberger Foundation
