For Grantmakers: Nonprofit Finance, a Grantmaking Practice Workshop

For Grantmakers: Nonprofit Finance, a Grantmaking Practice Workshop

Tuesday, July 25, 2017, 9:00 - 11:00 AM

The use of the nonprofit form 990 to evaluate a nonprofit organization's financial health is becoming routine - even computerized - with easy access to www.guidestar.org and www.nonprofitfinancefund.org.  But not all organizations are alike, and a quick look at the 990 yields hundreds of lines, three columns, attachments and statements and all those accounting terms we never can remember!

At this grantmaking practice workshop, Nancy Hall of 501c Solutions returns to Maryland Philanthropy Network to help us reduce the essential financial information to a series of computational ratios, but further explain how to interpret the numbers based on a nonprofit organization's age, mission, or funding streams.

The workshop is scheduled for two hours to allow time for practicing with case studies.

If you look at nonprofit financials everyday or only a few times a year, this workshop is for you. Philanthropic due diligence should include examination of a nonprofit organization's financial health.  Not only does the funder gain a risk perspective, but there is an opportunity to help the organization understand its own path to sustainability and fulfilling its mission.

About Nancy Hall: Nancy retired from the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations after seventeen years. However, she did not retire from the nonprofit sector and now consults and trains on a wide range of topics including finance, marketing, and planning.  Nancy is adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins teaching nonprofit management. She has an MBA from Harvard Business School.
