A Conversation with Vu Dang, Chief Service Officer

A Conversation with Vu Dang, Chief Service Officer

Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 9:00 - 10:30 AM

How do you engage city residents to volunteer to confront Baltimore's challenges and serve vulnerable people throughout the city? To help 60,000 Baltimoreans sustain recovery from drugs and alcohol abuse? To repurpose 14,000 vacant lots? To help hundreds of youth each year who are involved with the juvenile justice system? That is the towering task before Vu Dang, the city's first Chief Service Officer, and the goal of a new campaign – stepUP! Baltimore. Join Mr. Dang to learn more about the city's plan and share your views on how we unlock the potential of volunteers to be agents of change.

stepUP! Baltimore is part of Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of mayors who have committed to work together to engage citizens in a multi-year effort to address pressing city needs through impact volunteerism. The coalition includes more than 100 mayors, representing more than 49 million Americans across the nation. Cities of Service supports mayors to leverage citizen service strategies, addressing local needs and making government more effective. All Cities of Service efforts are characterized by a concept called "impact volunteering” – volunteer strategies that target community needs, use best practices, and set clear outcomes and measures to gauge progress.
