The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States, provides approximately $125 million in annual grants to nonprofits that provide direct services to low-income and vulnerable individuals and families, primarily in the United States and Israel. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Specific to the role of Program Officer
- Provide support in the Foundation’s Health and Jobs grantmaking portfolios.
- Develop and demonstrate subject matter expertise in the specific areas that the Program Officer is responsible for.
- Manage a range of special projects and initiatives nationally, and within priority communities, to accomplish specific goals and outcomes within the areas of Health and Jobs.
- Represent the Foundation at professional meetings and in the broader community of grantees, foundations, civic leaders, and other Foundation partners.
- Convene meetings of grantees and external experts on topics related to the Foundation’s grantmaking interests in multiple subject matter areas.
- Attend conferences and, at times, serve as a speaker on topics relevant to the Foundation’s work.
- Provide personalized guidance to prospective applicants via phone calls, emails, or in-person meetings.
- Support the President and the Managing Director of Programs in managing relationships with partners, public officials, and institutions.
- Report directly to the Managing Director, Programs and/or Senior Program Director on a range of projects and assignments related to the Foundation’s grantmaking.
- Assist Program Team members in conducting due diligence related to the Foundation’s standard grantmaking activities.
- Conduct research that will inform the Foundation’s grantmaking strategies and decisions.
- Conduct site visits, convenings and other events within priority communities as necessary.
- Evaluate the feasibility of grant proposals and investigate organizational capacity to achieve proposed objectives
- Conduct in-person site visits as part of grant application review process
- Manage compliance with deadlines and other grant application and reporting requirements
- Monitor and support grantees in tracking and evaluating ongoing projects
- Proactively seek new grantees and opportunities for philanthropic investment, focused on improving the lives of vulnerable populations
- Prepare materials such as memos and reports, for inclusion in regular meetings with staff and Trustees
- Present information and analysis at various in-house meetings with staff and Trustees
- Work well with fellow program officers and all foundation staff
- Attend weekly meetings with all program staff to discuss grants and other topics
- Ensure prompt turn-around time regarding grant reporting requirements and deadlines
- Read progress reports to evaluate previous grantees and to inform future funding recommendations
- Review capital grant budgets, costs and forecasts when recommending capital grants
- Review payment requests and approve payments
