POSTPONED: The Promise of Free Community College in Maryland: Where are we now?

POSTPONED: The Promise of Free Community College in Maryland: Where are we now?

Tuesday, March 12, 2019, 12:00 - 1:30 PM

Due to an unforeseen issue, this program has been postponed. We will reschedule it for later this spring. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship Program becomes available to applicants beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year. The Promise Scholarship creates opportunities for students to attend one of Maryland’s public community colleges by providing tuition assistance for any student eligible for in-state tuition. Also in 2018, the Baltimore Mayor’s Scholar’s program was launched with the promise of free community college for Baltimore City residents. So is community college now “free” in Maryland?

Please join us for this program to learn the facts about these important scholarship programs, gaining knowledge of who can benefit and how college programs are structured. We will be joined by Cristina Lopez, Special Assistant to the President for the Mayor’s Scholars Program, BCCC, who will provide background on Promise programs around the country and an update on the Baltimore Mayor’s Scholars Program.

We will also hear from Donna Thomas, Director, Office of Student Financial Assistance at Maryland Higher Education Commission. Ms. Thomas will discuss the Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship Program and the Workforce Development Sequence Scholarships. Don Elliott, CCBC's Director of Continuing Education Operations and Online Learning, will provide additional information about the Promise program in Baltimore County.

Maryland Philanthropy Network members will leave with a better understanding of opportunities and gaps in making a post-secondary degree or certification more accessible to all.

This program is for Maryland Philanthropy Network members only. Lunch will be served.
